Hot Tub Brands to Avoid: Warranties Checked

We checked the brands Reddit and Google's AI say to avoid against their own warranties, sales channels and recall records. Here is what holds up.

Shortlist

Quick answer: Checked against their own warranties and recall records on October 23, 2026: avoid Futura Spas (no labor warranty, repairs only at its factory at your shipping cost), ThermoSpas (its website sells parts and no new tubs) and inflatables such as Intex and Bestway as year-round tubs. Buy Catalina, Dr. Wellness or Hudson Bay (all made by LPI) only with the full written warranty for your exact model in hand before the deposit, and American Spas only if a local technician agrees to service it. The forum warnings about Cal Spas and Hot Spring are not backed by their current warranties.

Best for

Buyers who saw a brand on a Reddit, YouTube or AI 'avoid' list and want to know whether the paper backs it up before they sign.

Wrong fit

Anyone looking for a soak test. We read warranty documents, sales pages and recall records; we did not test tubs.

Tradeoff

The brands with the thinnest paper are often the cheapest. A low price with a 90-day, six-month or owner-paid labor term can leave you with the technician's full bill the first time a heater or control board fails.

Most "hot tub brands to avoid" lists are forum threads retold. Google's AI answer for this search, read on October 23, 2026, builds its list from Reddit, YouTube and a Facebook group. We took every brand those sources name and checked it against the brand's own warranty document, where it is sold, whether the company still sells new tubs, and the US and Canadian recall databases. Some warnings hold up on paper. Some do not.

How We Checked

We started from the brands Google's AI answer, Reddit's r/hottub, a Hot Tub Owners Facebook group, YouTube reviewers and a Trouble Free Pool thread tell buyers to avoid. For each, we looked for five things in primary sources, on October 23, 2026:

  1. A warranty document you can read before you pay. The manufacturer's own PDF or warranty page, not a sales summary.
  2. The labor term and who pays the trip. Parts warranties are long everywhere. Labor is where cheap tubs get expensive.
  3. Where it is sold and who services it. A local dealer, the brand's own stores, or a shipping box.
  4. Whether the company still sells new tubs. Checked on the brand's own website.
  5. Recalls since 2018. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada recall records.

No brand paid for a position on this page, and a brand's reply can correct a fact but cannot change a verdict that the documents support. We did not soak in or take apart any of these tubs, and we found no published, independent failure-rate data for any hot tub brand, so "avoid" here means "the paper gives you a specific reason to walk away," not "this tub breaks more often."

Futura Spas: No Labor Warranty at All

Futura's own 2023 limited warranty, for US models built in 2022 and later, is the clearest case on this page. The shell numbers look generous: 25 years on structure and 15 years on the surface, though Futura pays only 50% of a surface repair after year 5. Plumbing, electronics, pumps, the heater and the cabinet get 2 years.

Then it excludes labor: "Futura Marketing does not include any labor warranty. The customer will be responsible for all labor costs." It also states "We do not have any authorized service representatives." Covered repairs happen only at the factory, and "you must pay the cost to return the spa or part to us." Claims must reach Futura in writing within ten days of discovering the problem, and the document tells you not to contact the retailer. The warranty is non-transferable. Futura's website sends buyers to a single named dealer, Spa Guy USA.

Verdict: avoid, unless you are comfortable diagnosing and replacing a pump or heater yourself. A covered part still costs you the technician, or the freight to the factory and back.

ThermoSpas: The Website Now Sells Parts, Not Hot Tubs

ThermoSpas used to sell new hot tubs under its own name. On October 23, 2026, thermospas.com forwarded to the ThermoSpas Online Store, whose menu lists water care, filters, covers, steps and parts and service, with no hot tub or swim spa category. A parts and service phone line is still listed.

The last warranty the store still hosts (Rev. 03/23, for tubs built after March 1, 2018) pairs long terms with fast proration: 20 years structural and 10 years on equipment and electronics, but one year of labor from delivery. Equipment coverage drops to 75% in years 2 and 3, 50% in years 4 to 6 and 25% after that. Charges applied for return service visits, failed parts went back at your expense, and "this entire warranty terminates if you (original purchaser) sell or otherwise transfer the hot tub."

We found no court filing or press release explaining what happened to the company, so we will not guess. On October 23, 2026, ThermoSpas' own website offered no new tub. Treat any ThermoSpas for sale as old stock or used, with factory support you cannot count on.

Verdict: avoid buying one, new-old stock or used, if the price assumes factory support. If you already own one, buy parts while the store sells them.

LPI's Brands: Catalina, Dr. Wellness and Hudson Bay

Forum posts lump these brands together because one company makes them. Leisure Products International (LPI), of Johnson City, Tennessee, shows Catalina, Dr. Wellness and Hudson Bay as "Our Family of Brands" on its own homepage, and sells them through its own Aqua Living Factory Outlets chain. Its homepage claims both "over 70 company-owned stores" and "Over 90+ stores nationwide," so find the nearest store on its locator before you count on local service. Our Catalina Spas profile covers the brand's history and prices.

What the documents show:

  • Dr. Wellness. The warranty section of the Tranquility Series owner's manual (uploaded December 2022) describes itself as a summary: "The following are not actual warranties, but detailed descriptions of our warranty policies and procedures." The warranty it points to is not posted. The summary lists labor for six months from purchase, then you pay. Components and plumbing run five years, but the owner pays 50% of a repair in year 3, 65% in year 4 and 80% in year 5. Trip and diagnostic charges are excluded, and coverage ends on transfer.
  • Catalina. No standalone warranty document is posted, and the owner's manual on its support page has no warranty terms. The only published terms we found are on the Berkshire model page (checked October 14, 2026): 5 years on major components and 18 months of labor, with extended labor sold as an add-on. Catalina lists prices from $14,499 (Kennedy) to $19,999 (Berkshire and Nantucket).
  • Hudson Bay. We found no warranty document at all.

One more thing to know before you trust a ranking. hottub.com's 2026 "Top Rated Luxury Hot Tub Brands" list, on Google's first page for "most reliable hot tub brands" on October 23, 2026, puts Catalina first with 97 points and Dr. Wellness second with 91, credited to an "independent research team." Its footer says Aqua Living Factory Outlets "is a wholly-owned subsidiary of LPI, Inc.," the company that makes both brands. Its six scoring criteria (innovation 25 points, luxury-buyer reviews 20, design 15, standard features 15, customization 15, American manufacturing 10) include no measure of warranty, service or reliability.

Verdict: avoid unless you have the complete written warranty for your exact model in hand before the deposit, including the labor term, the prorated years and what a service trip costs. Of the brands on this page, only Futura (no labor) and AquaRest (90 days) give less labor than six months.

Laguna Bay Spas: Now a Dr. Wellness Redirect

Laguna Bay is named in AI answers as an Amazon-sold rebrand. Its domain, lagunabayspas.com, now forwards to the Dr. Wellness website, which sends buyers to Aqua Living Factory Outlets. No Laguna Bay warranty document is posted.

Verdict: assume nothing better than Dr. Wellness's published terms, six months of labor, unless the seller gives you a Laguna Bay warranty in writing. A redirect does not prove the two share a warranty.

American Spas: Cal Spas' Maker, Thinner Paper Online

American Spas' own warranty page says the tubs are produced by Lloyd's Material Supply Company, Inc., the same company Cal Spas' 2026 owner's manual names as its manufacturer in Pomona, California. Its homepage advertises "FACTORY DIRECT PRICING" and free shipping.

The paper is shorter than the dealer line from the same maker: 5 years structural, 5 years on the acrylic surface, 2 years on equipment and controls, 2 years on plumbing and 1 year on the cabinet, for models made on or after October 11, 2024. The page calls each of those terms an "industry-best warranty." It covers only the original buyer of a new spa and names no labor term or trip charge. A 2014 version, hosted on Home Depot's file server, gave one year of labor and allowed travel mileage charges.

Verdict: avoid unless a local hot tub technician agrees, before you order, to service it. The same maker's dealer-sold Platinum and Escape lines carry 5 years on equipment with labor on approved claims. Ask for both prices.

Inflatable Hot Tubs: Fine for a Summer, Not for a Winter

Coleman SaluSpa is a Bestway product, so these are really two companies: Intex and Bestway. Their own documents explain why they fail as year-round tubs.

  • Warranty. Bestway's US site lists 30 days on accessories, 180 days on the liner and 365 days on the heater and pump, names no labor coverage, and adds: "Not all of our products have a manufacture warranty." Intex's standalone PureSpa warranty says 1 year; a 2024 PureSpa owner's manual says 2 years. Both Intex documents make you ship the part to a service center at your cost and exclude freeze damage.
  • Cold limits. The 2024 Intex manual says not to use the spa when the air or water is 39°F or lower. Bestway's 2025 manual draws the line at 14°F outside.
  • Heat-up time. Bestway's 2025 manual estimates 23 to 40 hours to heat water from 50°F to 104°F. Intex lists 2 to 3°F per hour for its 4-person model.
  • The recall. On September 12, 2024, CPSC announced a recall of about 866,000 Bestway AirJet and HydroJet spa pumps sold with SaluSpa, Coleman and Hydro-Force liners, because they "can overheat causing the plastic housing to ignite." One death was reported, in a January 2024 house fire. Another 84,952 were recalled in Canada. The pumps were sold from May 2021 through May 2024; check the label on the side or back of the pump for model P05332, P05339, P05711, P05807, P07000, P07001, P05511, P07034 or P07572. The remedy is a free replacement pump or a refund.

Verdict: avoid an inflatable as a year-round tub, or anywhere winters go below freezing. As a summer tub with a one-year horizon it does what it says. Our inflatable hot tub guide covers the running costs.

Cal Spas: The Forum Warning Does Not Match the 2026 Paperwork

A 2020 Trouble Free Pool post said to "avoid CalSpas at all costs if shopping new." The 2026 Platinum, Escape X and Deck owner's manual (Rev E, March 16, 2026) reads like a mainstream dealer brand: 10 years structural, 7 years shell surface, 5 years on equipment and controls, 5 years on plumbing and 5 years on the cabinet. "There will be no charge for parts or Labor to repair the defect," though the dealer may add a travel fee and a diagnosis fee, and freight on replacement parts is yours.

Three things to read before you sign. The Patio and Patio Plus lines get less: 5 years structural and 3 years on everything else. A Patio Plus product page advertises a "10 Years Best In Industry Warranty" in its spec table while its own warranty table says 5 years structural. And the warranty is void if the electrical work misses the stated GFCI, wire and code requirements, and ends if you sell or move the tub.

Verdict: the 2026 documents give no reason to avoid the Platinum and Escape lines. Get the warranty table for your exact series in writing.

Hot Spring: A Recall, Not a Reason to Avoid

Google's AI answer cites a Facebook thread in which technicians say Hot Spring tubs are hard to repair. A warranty cannot tell you how hard a tub is to work on. What it does show is strong coverage: the current Highlife warranty (PN 63317 Rev E) gives 7 years on the shell surface and 5 years on plumbing, components, heater and cabinet, with labor included for the term, though "the servicing dealer may charge you a repairperson travel/service charge that is not covered by this warranty."

The real news for owners is a recall. On February 12, 2026, CPSC announced that Watkins Manufacturing, Hot Spring's maker, was recalling rotary jets in about 32,900 Highlife spas in the US and 853 in Canada: the Grandee, Envoy, Vanguard, Aria, Prodigy, Sovereign, Jetsetter and Jetsetter LX from model years 2023 to 2025. The jets "can create a suction force that allows the user's hair to be entangled," posing entanglement and drowning hazards. CPSC lists one report of hair entanglement and no injuries. The fix is free replacement jet inserts, and because the jets were also sold as replacement parts, check yours even if your Highlife is older.

Verdict: no document reason to avoid. If you own a 2023 to 2025 Highlife, stop using the recalled jets and get the free inserts. Our Caldera vs Hot Spring comparison covers the full warranty set.

Recalls Hit Premium Brands Too

A recall is not, by itself, a reason to avoid a brand. These are the recalls since 2018 that name a hot tub brand in CPSC records, and the premium names are on the list.

The brand matters less than who near you will do the free fix. A recall on a brand with a local dealer is a service appointment. On a brand with no service network, it is a box you pack yourself.

Red Flags That Apply to Any Brand

These are the patterns behind every verdict above. Use them on brands this page does not name.

  1. No warranty document before the deposit. Catalina, Hudson Bay and Laguna Bay post none. If the seller cannot hand you the document, the warranty is whatever the store says it is.
  2. Labor under a year, or none. Futura gives none, Dr. Wellness six months, and AquaRest 90 days. Most dealer brands bundle labor with the full parts term. Our dealer support comparison lines up 13 brands.
  3. You ship the tub or the part. Futura repairs only at its factory, at your shipping cost. Even Bullfrog sends a structure or frame failure after year seven to its factory at the owner's expense.
  4. Prorated coverage inside the first five years. Dr. Wellness's owner share of component repairs climbs from 50% to 80% in years 3 to 5, and ThermoSpas' equipment coverage dropped to 75% after the first year. Viking's owner share of parts and labor rises from 45% in year 3 to 75% in year 6, inside a six-year term that still covers more labor than most.
  5. Nobody local to fix it. Futura has no service representatives, AquaRest has no dealer network, and American Spas ships to your door. Ask who will come out before you order.
  6. Travel and labor caps. Arctic Spas pays service travel only in the first 30 days and within 100 km of the dealer, and its Custom warranty covers at most $60 of on-site labor per approved claim.
  7. A website that forwards, is parked, or sells only parts. ThermoSpas, Laguna Bay and Life Spas all fit this in October 2026.
  8. A "best brands" ranking published by the seller. hottub.com ranks its parent company's own brands first and second.
  9. A used tub from an unvetted reseller. In February 2025, Florida's Attorney General won a permanent ban against a used hot tub reseller accused of "selling damaged, defective, dangerous, and inoperative used hot tubs."

One thing that is not a red flag for any single brand: every major warranty we have read ends when the tub changes owner. Buy a used tub assuming no warranty, whatever the badge. Our used hot tub guide shows the clause brand by brand.

The Most Reliable Hot Tub Brands, by the Same Evidence

No one publishes failure rates, so "most reliable" can only mean what the paper and the service network promise. On that test, these brands sell through dealers and publish multi-year terms. Four include labor for the full parts term; Bullfrog does not when it ships you a replacement part:

  • Jacuzzi. The 2025 J-400 warranty: 10 years shell structure, 7 years surface, 5 years equipment and controls, with parts and labor free for covered defects. You may be charged reasonable technician travel mileage.
  • Hot Spring. Highlife: 7 years surface, 5 years on plumbing, components, heater and cabinet, labor bundled, travel fee possible. Hot Spring calls its dealer network the world's largest but gives no count.
  • Caldera. The Utopia warranty bundles labor with parts, and the dealer may charge "a reasonable repairperson travel/service charge."
  • Bullfrog. M Series, A Series and STIL: 10 years shell structure, 7 years surface, 5 years equipment, and 575 locations on its own store finder. The catch: when Bullfrog supplies a replacement part, you pay to remove the old one and install the new one, plus mileage and shipping, from day one.
  • Cal Spas. Platinum and Escape: 10, 7 and 5 years, labor covered on approved claims, travel and diagnosis fees possible.

Between two of these, the local dealer decides more than the badge. Run the ZIP code check in our dealer support guide and see how long hot tubs last for part-by-part lifespans. If you already have a quote, send it to our free quote review and we will check the warranty lines against the documents above.

What We Could Not Verify

  • Life Spas. lifespas.com showed a parked-domain placeholder on October 23, 2026, and we found no current warranty document, so we cannot test the forum claims either way. Do not confuse it with Lifesmart, a separate brand sold at Home Depot.
  • Hudson Bay's warranty and current retailers. No document found.
  • What happened to ThermoSpas, and who honors its warranties today. Its warranty names ThermoSpas Hot Tub Products Inc. at 14525 Monte Vista Ave., Chino, California; a building-products directory lists Sundance Spas at the same street address, but we found no primary source linking the two companies.
  • Intex's warranty length. Its two current documents say 1 year and 2 years.
  • Real failure rates for any brand. None are published.
  • Recalls we could miss. Our search covers recalls that name a hot tub brand. A recall of a supplier's part can affect a tub without naming its brand: Neptune Benson's December 2020 recall of Delta UV generators for pools and spas is one example.

FAQ

What hot tub brands should you avoid?

On the documents, Futura Spas (no labor warranty, factory-only repair at your shipping cost), ThermoSpas (its website sells parts, not new tubs) and inflatable tubs as year-round tubs. Buy LPI's Catalina, Dr. Wellness or Hudson Bay only with the complete written warranty for your exact model in hand, and American Spas only if a local technician agrees to service it. Cal Spas and Hot Spring are named on forum lists, but their current warranty documents give no reason to avoid them.

Are Catalina, Dr. Wellness and Hudson Bay good hot tubs?

They are LPI brands sold through LPI's own Aqua Living stores, and none posts a warranty document. The Dr. Wellness Tranquility Series manual summarizes six months of labor and owner-paid shares of 50% to 80% for component repairs in years 3 to 5. Catalina's one published model term is 18 months of labor. Get the full warranty for your exact model in writing before you pay a deposit.

Is Cal Spas a bad hot tub brand?

Not on its 2026 paperwork. The Platinum, Escape X and Deck manual gives 10 years structural, 7 years surface and 5 years on equipment, plumbing and cabinet, with parts and labor covered on approved claims. The cheaper Patio lines get 5 years structural and 3 years on the rest, and the dealer may charge travel and diagnosis fees.

Are inflatable hot tubs worth it?

For a summer, yes. As a year-round tub, no. Bestway covers the liner for 180 days and the heater and pump for 365 days, Intex says not to use its spa at 39°F or below, and Bestway estimates 23 to 40 hours to heat from 50°F to 104°F. About 866,000 Bestway spa pumps were recalled for fire in 2024.

What is the most reliable hot tub brand?

No brand publishes failure rates. On paper, Jacuzzi, Hot Spring, Caldera and Cal Spas' Platinum and Escape lines include labor for the full parts term and sell through dealers. Bullfrog lists 575 locations but bills you removal, installation, mileage and shipping whenever it supplies a replacement part. The deciding factor between them is usually the dealer who will service your address, not the brand.

Is the hottub.com brand ranking independent?

It is published by Aqua Living Factory Outlets, which its own footer calls a wholly-owned subsidiary of LPI, Inc. The 2026 list ranks LPI's Catalina first and Dr. Wellness second, both brands LPI makes and Aqua Living sells.
