Most comparison pages treat this as one tub against one wooden room. A buyer can actually enter four different lanes, plus an outdoor variation that changes the project again.

A 120V exception exists on both sides. Hot Spring documents several smaller spas that operate on 115V and can be converted to 230V. Tylö currently sells the Halmstad 2, a compact traditional sauna on 120V. So the shortcut "sauna plugs in, hot tub needs an electrician" is false.

Outdoor changes the sauna lane again. A cabin or barrel can need a drained base, weather detailing, delivery access, and either a high-amperage circuit or a code-compliant wood stove and chimney. Compare that project with a hot tub installation, not with a small indoor infrared box.

Wood-fired is a fifth lane, not an electricity-free version of the table above. This guide does not model its fuel or chimney cost because we could not verify a defensible national comparison. Require the stove, chimney, clearances, base, permit, weather protection, and fuel plan in the local quote before comparing it with either electric sauna lane.

A steam room is outside this comparison and should not be counted as either a traditional sauna or an infrared cabin.

Electrical, Site, and Space Can Decide Before Price

A full hot tub is a structural load

Hot Spring's current Rhythm is 7 x 7 feet, holds 330 gallons, and lists a filled weight of 4,820 pounds including occupants. That number belongs to one model, but it shows why a deck guess is not enough. The manufacturer needs a firm, continuous, level, load-bearing base, and a deck needs structural verification before delivery.

You also need access around the cabinet for service, room for the cover to open, drainage away from equipment, and a delivery path wider than the number you measured at the narrowest gate. The shell can arrive on its side, so height, corners, AC units, railings, and slopes all matter.

Most full-size dealer tubs use a dedicated 230V or 240V GFCI circuit. A plug-and-play model removes the hardwired circuit on some sites, but it does not remove the need to verify the receptacle, GFCI protection, cord route, and manufacturer instructions. A compact sauna wins space, not automatically installation

The one-person Sunlighten example is roughly 10.5 square feet by its cabinet footprint. The manufacturer recommends four inches around surrounding walls, 12 inches above, and room for an outward-swinging 28-inch door. Measure working space, not only the wood box.

Traditional electric heaters are sized to room volume. Finlandia's current residential table runs from a 3 kW heater on a 20A breaker for an 84-130 cubic-foot room to an 8 kW heater on a 40A breaker for 250-425 cubic feet. Many traditional saunas therefore need 240V electrical work, even though a few compact 120V designs exist.

Ventilation is part of the room, not an accessory. An indoor sauna needs air movement and a drying plan. An outdoor sauna trades that problem for a base, drainage, weather exposure, and equipment that is suitable for the climate.

Site verdict: the compact indoor infrared cabin has the simplest physical path in this comparison. The full-size hot tub has the largest structural load. A traditional or outdoor sauna sits between them only after the circuit, ventilation, and base are known.

Energy: Continuous Standby vs Per-Session Heat

The latest EIA monthly table puts the preliminary US residential average at 18.34 cents per kWh for June 2026, released August 26. Use the electricity rate on your own bill. The national number is only a common ruler for the examples below.

In these worked examples, regular traditional-sauna use lands near DOE's portable-spa planning figure. That does not make sauna and hot-tub energy use interchangeable: the sauna estimate depends on session frequency, while the hot-tub estimate includes continuous standby. Infrared starts lower in this table because the sampled cabin has a lower nameplate load.

The operating patterns remain different:

  • A hot tub pays to keep a large water mass ready. Cold weather, a damaged cover, a high set temperature, poor insulation, and active use can raise consumption.
  • A sauna pays when you heat it. More sessions, a larger room, more glass, cold outdoor conditions, and longer warm-up increase consumption.

California spa energy labels are useful for comparing covered standby performance between models, but the test is not your winter. It does not represent every active-use pattern or extreme cold. Ask a hot-tub dealer for the exact model's energy label rather than a brand-wide monthly claim.

What a Five-Year Comparison Must Include

This page does not publish a universal five-year total. A defensible calculation is:

equipment + delivery + pad or base + electrical or chimney work + permits + 60 months of electricity + 60 months of consumables + scheduled replacements + repairs

The examples above verify equipment and energy inputs. We could not verify defensible national averages for chemicals, filters, covers, stones, repairs, or local trade work across all five lanes. Fill those cells from the exact quotes and manuals. Otherwise, do not label the result a five-year total cost of ownership.

Maintenance: The Sauna Wins, but It Is Not Maintenance-Free

A hot tub has the heavier recurring workload because warm, aerated water must remain disinfected.

CDC's current targets for a home hot tub include at least 3 ppm free chlorine and pH 7.0-7.8. Its separate rash guidance lists 4-8 ppm bromine as an alternative. This is not fussy showroom advice. Inadequate disinfection can allow pathogens such as Pseudomonas and Legionella to spread through water or mist.

Some maintained salt systems claim longer intervals between drains. Hot Spring, for example, claims up to a year for its salt system. That does not remove testing, filter care, or the need to respond when the water moves out of range.

Sauna removes the stored-water system, which is a meaningful win. It does not remove moisture, body oils, wood, vents, a heater, or stones. Call it lower maintenance, not zero maintenance.

If you already know that regular testing will be skipped, do not buy a hot tub on the assumption that a cartridge or salt system will make the responsibility disappear. Read the beginner's water chemistry guide before paying a deposit.

Capacity and Heat Experience Are Not Interchangeable

A hot tub surrounds the body with 100-104°F water. Water transfers heat efficiently, buoyancy reduces the feeling of body weight, and jets add a directional sensation. Pumps also create noise. Entry means swimwear, a wet exit, and a cover that has to move every time.

A traditional sauna heats air, surfaces, and stones to much higher air temperatures than a hot tub. The room has a vertical temperature gradient, so bench height changes what you feel. Water on suitable stones adds a burst of humidity called löyly. You preheat, enter dry, sit or lie down, and cool afterward.

An infrared cabin is a third experience. It uses lower-temperature radiant panels and should not be treated as a small traditional sauna. If you want the high air temperature and stone-generated humidity of a Finnish-style room, infrared is not the cheap version of the same thing.

Capacity follows the physical layout:

  • The current Rhythm hot tub markets seven seats in a 7 x 7 foot shell. Seat count does not tell you whether seven adults fit comfortably or whether the therapy seats fit your bodies. Wet-test the actual model.
  • The current Signature I infrared cabin is explicitly a one-person product in a roughly 38 x 40 inch cabinet.
  • Almost Heaven markets the Salem for two people and publishes a 39.25 x 16 inch bench. That lets you compare the product-card number with the body space you expect; it is not proof that two adults will find it comfortable.
  • Sauna capacity depends on real bench length, depth, and usable upper-bench space. A person count on a product card does not tell you whether adults can sit without shoulders touching.

Choose for the routine you want. A hot tub is ready for a spontaneous shared soak if you keep it hot and clean. A sauna creates a session with a start and an end. Neither habit is automatically easier to sustain.

What the Health Research Does and Does Not Prove

The study occupying several positions in the current search results is one 2025 acute experiment, not three independent bodies of evidence.

A 2025 randomized crossover study of 20 healthy adults, including 10 women and an average age of 24, compared 45 minutes of 104.9°F hot-water immersion, three 10-minute bouts in a 176°F traditional sauna, and 45 minutes in a 113-149°F far-infrared sauna. Hot-water immersion produced the largest acute rise in core temperature and cardiovascular response. It was the only modality with a significant post-heating IL-6 increase. The reported NK- and CD8+ T-cell changes came from a six-participant subset and occurred 24 to 48 hours later.

The 104.9°F research protocol exceeded CDC's 104°F consumer ceiling and is not a safe-use recommendation.

That finding is interesting. It does not prove that buying a residential hot tub improves long-term health, prevents disease, beats exercise, or produces better recovery. It also does not prove that jets add a medical benefit, because the experiment studied controlled water immersion.

Sauna has influential long-term observational research, particularly from Finnish cohorts. Association is not causation, and traditional Finnish sauna findings cannot be silently transferred to an infrared cabin. Separately, a 2025 systematic review of 20 randomized trials found no significant pooled effect for most cardiometabolic outcomes, with substantial differences between studies.

The evidence-safe conclusion is narrow: both methods create heat stress, and the physiological dose differs. Neither product is established as the universal healthier purchase. Buy for ownership fit and the heat experience you will use, not for detox, weight-loss, disease-prevention, or exercise-replacement claims.

Safety Is Part of the Comparison

Neither product is safe for every person or every situation.

  • Temperature: CDC says hot-tub water should not exceed 104°F.
  • Children: CDC says children under five should not use a hot tub.
  • Pregnancy: ACOG says it is best to avoid both hot tubs and saunas early in pregnancy because prolonged heat can raise core temperature.
  • Heart and blood-pressure concerns: people with cardiovascular disease, unstable symptoms, hypotension risk, or medication concerns should get individualized medical advice. The American Heart Association says anyone told to avoid moderate exercise should also be cautious with sauna and hot-tub use.
  • Alcohol: do not combine alcohol with either product. In a hot tub, impairment also adds a drowning risk.
  • Rapid temperature changes: the AHA advises people with high blood pressure not to move rapidly between hot and cold environments.
  • Electrical: hot-tub circuits need model-specific GFCI protection and qualified installation. Sauna heater wiring and clearances must follow the listed equipment and local code.

Stop a session if you feel dizzy, faint, confused, nauseated, or unwell. This comparison is buyer guidance, not a personal medical clearance.

Which One Should You Buy?

Buy the hot tub when

  • Two or more people will use it together often.
  • Water immersion, buoyancy, and specific jet seats are the experience you actually want.
  • The site can take the filled load and the delivery route is confirmed.
  • You will test and maintain the water even when the novelty is gone.
  • The written quote includes the circuit, pad assumptions, placement, cover, steps, start-up, and service path.

Buy the infrared sauna when

  • One or two people want a compact indoor heat routine.
  • A dedicated 120V path fits the exact model and your room.
  • Low weekly maintenance matters more than traditional high heat and löyly.
  • You accept that an infrared cabin is its own modality, not a traditional sauna substitute.

Buy the traditional sauna when

  • High-temperature air, stones, and löyly are the point of the purchase.
  • You will use scheduled sessions often enough to justify warm-up.
  • The room volume, heater size, circuit, ventilation, and clearances have been designed together.
  • For an outdoor build, the base, drainage, weather details, and delivery are already priced.

Buy neither yet when

A traditional sauna used four times per week models to about $22-$29 per month at the June 2026 US electricity rate, close to the $26 monthly equivalent of DOE's older portable-spa planning estimate. Your rate, climate, model, cover, room, and use can reverse a generic answer.

Which needs more maintenance?

The hot tub. Stored hot water requires recurring sanitizer, pH, filter, drain, refill, and equipment work. A sauna still needs drying, ventilation, surface cleaning, and stone and heater inspection, but it does not need a managed body of recirculating water.

Do both need 240V?

No. 115V hot tubs, 120V infrared cabins, and even a few compact 120V traditional saunas exist. Many full-size hot tubs use 230V or 240V at 50A, and many traditional sauna heaters use 240V at an amperage matched to room volume. Read the exact model manual before asking an electrician to quote the circuit.

Which is better in a cold climate?
